Painting - 'Wrong category, but you get a prize anyway'
16 x 12"
oil on canvas mounted on panel
Artist Elizabeth R. Whelan is captivated by the judges' comments on the Martha's Vineyard Agricultural Fair entries.
The Ag Fair paintings are based on real entries and comments from the judges, but to protect the innocent, Elizabeth has changed the exhibitor names to notable ancient Romans -- so this is a MV Agricultural Fair entry from Lucius Domitius Ahenobarbus (AD 37 – 68), aka Nero Claudius Caesar Augustus Germanicus, fifth Roman Emperor!
She was amused to think of this capricious and tyrannical emperor entering his potatoes in the wrong category...
Elizabeth Whelan uses museum-quality materials including traditional oil paints and mediums, high-quality canvas and archival rigid panels, and has finished the painting with an archival satin varnish for protection.
The painting is framed in an unfinished maple floating frame.
