Artist Elizabeth R. Whelan is captivated by the judges' comments on the Martha's Vineyard Agricultural Fair entries. And this is the painting that inspired the entire series!

These are real entries with real comments, so to protect the innocent, Elizabeth changed out the names with those of Ancient Romans.

Here's an entry from from Marcus Tullius Cicero (106 – 43 BC), a Roman statesman, lawyer, scholar, philosopher, and academic skeptic. His influence on the Latin language was immense. He wrote more than three-quarters of extant Latin literature that is known to have existed in his lifetime.

Elizabeth Whelan uses museum-quality materials including traditional oil paints and mediums, high-quality canvas and archival rigid panels, and has finished the painting with an archival satin varnish for protection.

The painting is framed in an unfinished maple floating frame.
